04/14/2012: Josh Brolin & Gotye

Stick Figure Night Live! is a series of stick figure comic “recreations” of episodes of Saturday Night Live. Just as the show itself is performed live, the comics are drawn “live” while watching the show (with the occasional assist from DVR or some digital clean-up post scanning).

Two things off the top, pointing out the reality of what I cannot do with these stick figure drawings:

First, capture the sight and sound of the “Slow Motion Hallway” sketch (which I almost thought was going to be a return of “Narc School” from Brolin’s first hosting gig)…the combination of music and movement are two things that just do not translate in comics, let alone stick figures drawn rather hurriedly.

Second, the specific nuance and greatness of Vanessa Bayer and Bobby Moynihan during the “Empire State of Mind Parody” sketch. Bayer’s mouthing along as Bobby sang and Bobby’s go-for-broke dancing were, for me, the highlight of the whole show.

It’s a shame that NEITHER of those sketches are, as of this writing, on NBC’s site or app to watch (surely it’s a music rights issue).

Other than that, the pronunciation of Gotye bugged me, but that’s got nothing to do with anything.

But speaking of things bugging me (not to go off on a rant, Dennis Miller-style), but the huge applause that happens when someone’s indicating they might break and laugh during the show is becoming distracting. I’m almost positive it happens more in recent seasons than when Jimmy Fallon, often called out negatively for breaking, was in the case. I could be wrong…maybe I’m just an old crumudgeon.

Alright, no more editorializing. I’ll leave it at that.

May 5th’s the next live show, with Eli Manning and Rihanna, which kind of makes me want to ask “Didn’t this show happen already” What year is it?”.

But for what it’s worth, I can tell you now I’ll be a smidge late with that one because that weekend I’ll be out of town for Free Comic Book Day (Saturday, May 5, 2012). If you’re in or near the Greensboro, NC/Triad area, stop by Acme Comics in Greensboro. I’ll be there with a bunch of other cartoonists and writers and artists for their big FCBD event (they do it up big time). And if you’re not in the area but have even the slightest interest in comics, stop by your local participating shop and pick up some free comics! I have work (non-stick figure work in the form of the cover and an interior story) in the FREE SpongeBob SquarePants comic (a flip-book with the Simpsons FREE comic).

See you in May…
