Stick Figure Night Live! is a series of stick figure comic “recreations” of episodes of Saturday Night Live. Just as the show itself is performed live, the comics are drawn “live” while watching the show (with the occasional assist from DVR or some digital clean-up post scanning).
If nothing else, Melissa McCarthy took to the live stage really well…it’s almost a rare thing where a host doesn’t stare at cue cards throughout the show…that she appeared to look at them zero times was pretty great.
On the other hand, there was a lot of leaning on her being over-the-top and “brassy”, which…she surely has more range than that.
Also weird that “Bridesmaids” got mentioned a number of times but not a single mention of “Mike & Molly”, the show she won an Emmy for. I often wonder if that’s an NBC/Broadway video decision or what. I definitely remember a time when the host’s “day job” got some kind of mention or parody or something, and not doing that seems like a missed opportunity.
Did anyone else think it awkward of Paul Brittain, as the bartender in the last sketch of the night, to face the camera when reading phone messages off paper in his hand rather than the other players in the sketch?
Next week, Ben Stiller and a performance of “Pumped Up Kicks”…
